Model-guided design of a high performance and durability Ni nanofiber/ceria matrix solid oxide fuel cell electrode

Mixed ionic electronic conductors (MIECs) have attracted increasing attention as anode materials for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) and they hold great promise lowering the operation temperature of SOFCs. However, there has been a lack understanding performance-limiting factors guidelines rational design composite metal-MIEC electrodes. Using newly-developed approach based on 3D-tomography electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, here first time we quantify contribution dual-phase boundary (DPB) relative to three-phase (TPB) reaction pathway real MIEC A new strategy is developed Ni/gadolinium doped ceria (CGO) electrodes (a typical electrode) quantitative analyses novel Ni/CGO fiber–matrix structure proposed fabricated by combining electrospinning tape-casting methods using commercial powders. With only 11.5 vol% nickel, designer electrode shows 32% 67% lower polarization resistance than nano-Ni impregnated CGO scaffold conventional cermet respectively. The results in this paper demonstrate quantitatively structures that enhancing DPB hydrogen kinetics are more efficient strategies enhance performance simply TPB.
